Changmin needed to ask for help. And he resented that.
He knew it was petty of him and he knew that technically, as the youngest, it was totally expected of him, but his pride as Dong Bang Shin Ki's rebellious maknae had grown on him and he felt as if he'd be betraying his well-crafted image.
He decided to go to Yunho first. The older boy was more apt to take him seriously, since he was the leader and generally less of an asshole than the others. Changmin found him washing dishes and began to help dry. Yunho gave him a smile of thanks.
"Yunho-hyung. I have a question."
"Shoot," Yunho said as he picked at a stubborn piece of food.
"Junsu's not talking to me," Changmin scowled. "Usually I wouldn't mind, but it's the way he's not talking to me."
"Are you sure he's doing it on purpose?"
Changmin frowned as he twisted his dish rag. "Pretty sure. I said 'good morning' to him and he said 'shut up. I'm not talking to you.'"
"What'd you do to him?"
"Nothing," Changmin said defensively. "At least, nothing more than I usually do."
Yunho rolled his eyes. "Apologize," he ordered.
"For what?!"
Yunho shrugged. "For being you."
"I will not. Junsu's never had a problem with me being me before."
"Well, obviously something's changed. Figure out what it is, fix it and apologize."
Yunho sucked at giving advice. Changmin let his leader know that.
"I just have common sense," Yunho replied. "So do you. You know what you need to do. You were just hoping I'd come up with something different."
Changmin scoffed. "You're not as great as Jaejoong-hyung would have people believe." He got a face full of warm dishwater in response.
Later that evening, he decided to try asking Yoochun. He also decided to frame his problem a bit differently.
"Junsu's being mean to me," he pouted as he flopped on his hyung's bed.
Yoochun looked up from the manhwa he was reading. "What'd he do to you?"
"He told me to shut up this morning and he's spent the whole day ignoring me."
"Have you asked him why?"
"Didn't have the chance," Changmin snarked. "He's. Spent. The. Whole. Day. Ignoring. Me."
"Well, something must have happened. Junsu's not the manipulative type. He wouldn't act like that unless he had a reason to."
"Are you saying this is my fault?"
Yoochun turned back to his book and flipped the page. "I'm saying I can't help you much unless I know the reason why Junsu's being mean to you."
"Can't he just be an asshole?"
"It's not in his nature to be an asshole." Yoochun smirked. "You, on the other hand ..."
"I didn't do anything to Junsu!" Changmin stated loudly. He was getting tired of having to say that.
"When was the last time you talked to him?"
Changmin rested his chin on his hands as he thought. "Yesterday afternoon. He showed me a new song he was working on. It was horrible."
"I hope you tell didn't tell him that."
"Duh. I may have laughed a little, too. Didn't you read it? It was sappy as hell."
"Junsu didn't show me any song," Yoochun said, shaking his head.
"He must have. He said it was a special project he'd been working on the last eight months and wanted feedback."
"Well, he didn't show it to me. Just apologize to him. He'll get over it."
More sucky advice. Changmin wanted his relationship with Junsu to go back to normal without any swallowing of pride on his part. He'd already sacrificed his dignity to ask for advice from his oblivious hyungs. He needed to talk to someone just as stubborn and vain as him. He needed to find Jaejoong.
"Have you heard Junsu's craptastic new song?" Changmin asked when he barged in on Jaejoong in the bath.
The lead singer didn't react to the invasion. "Which craptastic new song?" he asked as he sunk deeper into the water. (That was why he was Changmin's favorite.)
"The one he was showing off yesterday."
"He didn't show me anything."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. What's this about?" Jaejoong questioned.
"I may have upset Junsu by laughing at a song he wrote."
The singer shook his head in disapproval. "You know how much his music means to him."
Changmin rolled his eyes. "Everything means everything to Junsu."
"What was his horrible song about?"
Changmin sat on the edge of the tub. "It was a love song," he replied with a trace of scorn. "The title was 'A Prickly Heart' or something. One of the lyrics went 'Each barb you send ensares my soul.'"
"Are you serious?"
"Yes! Can you believe it? He's like some girl."
Jaejoong stared at him a moment before splashing him with bathwater "You're kind of a dumbass."
"What?"
"Go be nice to Junsu. Apologize for being a dick and tell him you realized how much you love his song."
"But, I don't."
"Stop being so thick, Minnie-ah," Jaejoong ordered. "As your hyung, I'm telling you to go find Junsu and apologize. I don't want him moping around over you."
Jaejoong rarely pulled the "hyung card" on him, but when he did he could be a real bastard about it, wielding it with more insistance than Yunho and more vindictiveness than Yoochun.
"Fine, hyung," he mumbled as he rose to leave the bathroom. "I'll remember the 'no moping' policy the next time Yunho-hyung ignores you for his friends."
Jaejoong threw a wet washcloth at the back of his head as he left. "No one likes a smart-ass, Changminnie."
When Changmin found Junsu, he was curled up on his bed with "Whatever They Say" playing quietly in the background. His knees were drawn to his chest and his face was red. He was every bit the girl Changmin accused him of being.
Changmin cleared his throat as he searched for something to say. "Junsu-yah, are you hungry?"
The other boy ignored him.
"I'm thinking of grabbing some ramen from down the street," he tried again. "Want to come?"
Silence.
Changmin sighed and sat down on the bed. "Junsu ... " he began.
The older boy refused to look at him. "What?"
"Junsu," Changmin started again. The words were slow coming. "I ... I don't hate your song."
"Get out," Junsu demanded pitifully.
"Come on, Junsu. I'm sorry I laughed at you."
"Leave me alone, Changmin-ah."
Changmin frowned. "I said I was sorry. You know how I can be. I didn't mean anything by it."
Junsu scoffed quietly. "That's the problem."
The younger boy hesitated a moment before lying down behind Junsu and wrapping his arms around him. "C'mon, Su-ah. It wasn't that big a deal."
The singer stiffened in Changmin's arms. "I'm glad you think so," he replied bitterly.
"To be fair, you must have known the song wasn't your best or you would have shown Jaejoong-hyung and Yoochun-hyung."
"I didn't show just anyone the song, Minnie-ah," the older boy said softly. "No one saw it but you."
"Why?"
Junsu twisted in Changmin's arms to study the other boy's face. "You can't be that stupid."
"Rude!"
Junsu ignored him. "You can't figure out why I would write you a love song and only show it to you?"
"You wrote that song for me?"
"You didn't get that after hearing the title?"
Changmin fidgeted. "It wasn't my first thought, no."
Junsu looked away from Changmin and tried to slip out of his arms. "Well, don't worry about giving it another."
The magnae tightened his grip. "You wrote that song for me." Changmin stated again with a touch of glee in his voice.
The other boy blushed, his cheeks turning a light shade of pink. "Yes."
"You like me?"
Junsu's face got redder. "Yes."
"You want my 'prickly heart'?"
"Don't make fun," Junsu whined.
"Does that mean you like me best when I'm a jerk?"
"No. It means for some crazy reason I like you despite the fact that you're a jerk."
Changmin smirked before leaning in. "I like you, too."
Junsu gave him a hopeful look before closing the gap between their faces and pressing an awkwardly gentle kiss on the corner of his mouth.
The younger boy grinned. "Guess that means you're not mad at me anymore."
"No," Junsu said poking his cheek in admonishment. "I'm still kind of upset. I worked hard on that song."
Changmin pressed a kiss to Junsu's temple and spoke into his warm skin. "You'll forgive me."
